The WDCA Executive Committee extends its congratulations on behalf of the WDCA to the 2008 recipients: Marquette University High School's Joseph Balistreri and Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School's Emily Summers.
There¹s an old saying about champions: the ones who are the most successful think of champion as a verb, before they consider it a noun. They champion causes that are important, and therefore, work to bring others success in their lives. The first recipient has a passion for mathematics as much as he does for debate. As his coach writes, "work ethic and passion for the activity" are qualities embodied in this young man. Never taking success for granted, he is humble in accepting awards for his wins. As an Advanced Placement student, he has already earned a "5" and continues to study hard in his other course. He has tutored, helped with Special Olympics, and worked with a retirement home. Ladies and gentlemen, one of your defending state champions in Varsity Switch-Sides Policy Debate, hailing from Marquette University High School, Joseph Balistreri! Our second recipient also has a passion for mathematics! Anyone who knows this student marvels in her passion for personal growth. More important, as one advisor wrote, "she speaks of diversity in its truest form, that diversity represents schools of thought, learning styles, socio-economic background, religion, and politics, in addition to understanding of race and gender." As an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, she embodies the virtue in the IB Mission Statement that rings true in debate, "understanding that other people with their differences, can also be right." She is a dedicated musician, member of the Link Crew, Gay-Straight Alliance and founding member of Students for Peace. Ladies and gentlemen, a student hailing from Rufus King High School, Emily Summers!
